404: bird not found

10/30/2017

how do you photograph a blue jay?

shortly after Thanksgiving, I was reminded that I need practice with the art of bird photography. on a walk at a provincial park we saw a blue jay - it stubbornly flew about with little care of being captured on film. neither of us could take a photo of it; not one where it was distinguishable from a fallen leaf, that is. luckily, I do know of a couple of good bird photographers if I ever want to glimpse a blue jay, hummingbird, or another feathery cutie for more than a few seconds.

perhaps there was a lesson in not succeeding; though capturing memories in photographs is wonderful, it is also important to savour the moments spent with others without needing to encapsulate each second in a digital format. we still shared the experience of seeing the bird, blue standing out against brown and yellow leaves. we still got to walk through the forest, take in the autumn scents and sights. we only took a few photos that trip, but there will always be the memories.
