an American Canadian

inspired by the vicious attack on the US Capitol building in DC today.

a lot of angry, typically White, folks in the US
arrogantly think they can go anywhere
and get anything they want through violence.

why would these people see the Capitol as off-limits
when banks, concerts, hotels, gas stations, liquor stores, elementary schools, high schools,
colleges, offices, fairs, etc., are, in their eyes, places "free reign" for their violence.

lack of critical thinking skills combined with entitlement, racism, and more,
fuel these folks' efforts to make the US a living h***,
yet their actions aren't named for what they are because the perpetrators are White.
from Columbine to Sandy Hook, and other horrific acts before, between, and since.

far too many students and educators in America have had to endure the trauma
of preparing for the possibility of someone violent entering their school's building or grounds.
I remember, as early as age eleven, having to learn how to (try to)
keep safe in my classroom if a dangerous intruder situation arose.

America has been far from equitable, safe, or honourable since before its birth.
just listen to the stories of those who know far better than I do,
those who have lived at the hands of injustice
and systemic racism of White Supremacy in America.
